Why did I become a DJ for WXCU?
By Stella Cherwinski
Getting involved with WXCU and becoming a DJ has been one of the most fun things I
have done in my college career! I didn’t know Capital had a radio station until my friend, and
fellow DJ, Charlotte had her own radio show one semester. I was able to spend a lot of time with
her in the studio and get a feel for the radio before I officially became a DJ and took the radio as a
class. Once I learned what being a DJ was like I was totally on board. I was really excited to have a
show of my own and get to tell a story with music in a new and unique way.
Since I have always been interested in every genre or type of music, I had the idea to create a
show that was centered around a different genre every week. My exigence for this idea was having a
show that was country music that was actually good. I love country music and have since I was a
little kid, but the state of country music nowadays is pretty bleak. So, I wanted to share all of the
interesting, different, true-to-the-genre’s roots of country music–both classic and modern–that I
felt captured the kind of country music that I listen to and think others should too. From there I
have had shows that center around Broadway musical music, reggae, sad indie, and many more!

You have complete say over what you get to play on the air (as long as it follows FCC
guidelines), so you get to share whatever you want with listeners! I like to think of making each
show as telling a story to the listener. I have something in mind that I want to share with the people
listening, and I use the music to share my thoughts. At the end of each show I hope to leave
listeners having heard a new song they like, or learned something new. I really love having my own
radio show, and I encourage anyone who is interested to do it. Even if it seems scary, pushing
yourself will be good for you. Have fun! Play music!
